Get your tickets now for the biggest Transformers 2 experience in Sydney - Only at IMAX In Darling Harbour

Tickets have just gone on sale for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which debuts here at IMAX in Darling Harbour at midnight 12.01am on Wed 24 June.

Select scenes have been shot with IMAX cameras which means the film will vertically expand to fill the entire IMAX screen at key points - that's eight storeys high! The only film to use this filmmaking technique before was The Dark Knight, which drew gasps and applause from audiences when those first enormous IMAX scenes appeared on screen.

Tell us - Will you be heading down to Darling Harbour to see those bots bigger and better at IMAX?

Got tickets! Im So there... Going to be amazing. Does anyone know how many minutes are actually shot in IMAX and what scenes etc? Cheers
    • Congrats James! We don't know just yet exactly how many minutes or in fact which scenes, but I imagine it'll be similar to The Dark Knight, which had the full-screen IMAX sequences dotted throughout the whole film. We'll keep you posted if we find out more.

How is IMAX at the Entertainment Quarter called IMAX when it most certainly isn't an IMAX theatre?
    • The IMAX Theatre at Hoyts EQ is a new style IMAX theatre that uses digital projection technology, rather than large format film which we use here in Darling Harbour. This is part of a global strategy by IMAX Corporation to expand their theatre network, primarily for the feature length ("DMR") films. While the digital projection system presents crystal clear images and is supported by a top notch sound system, it simply can't achieve images of the size and scale you are obviously used to seeing here in Darling Harbour.

It's important to note that we operate as a stand alone IMAX Theatre here in Darling Harbour, with no affiliation at all with the theatre at EQ.

You might be interested to read an article in the Hollywood Reporter that explains some of these issues further. http://tiny.cc/kEdXY
  • This is an issue that has caused considerable controversey amongst operators of traditional, film based IMAX theatres. It's important to note that IMAX Corporation operates very few of these film based theatres (about 10 in North America, out of the 350+ IMAX theatres globally). Their decision to introduce a digital IMAX branded system into multiplexes is not the key issue, the real issue is why they have decided these should be branded as IMAX Theatres when the experience they offer is so markedly different from the traditional theatres. Never miss a movie at IMAX... especially when its the sequel of my favourite movie. Planning up with my mates to come in a group. Transformers, unite!

Thanks Julie. I agree. I saw Star Trek first at the Imax in EQ, it was a horrible experience. The sound and picture was nothing special, it looked like there was a grid or a fly-screen effect covering the movie. Really distracting. Dissapointed by this, I re-watched Star Trek at Imax Darling Harbour and it was absolutely satisfying, Amazing sound and huge crisp 70mm resolution. Seeing it in true IMAX made me feel ripped off even more by this "so-called digital Imax" at EQ. Imax Darling Harbour is obviously the only way to watch Imax movies if you care about getting the best quality for your money.
  • I've noticed Hoyts are promoting their IMAX digital season saying 'sequences filmed with IMAX cameras'. Whilst this is undoubtedly true the IMAX digital screen is a different aspect ratio and therefore unable to show the full image as it was filmed with the IMAX cameras. It's unclear how these scenes will appear in IMAX digital as they don't have the screen height to allow the image to expand fully, as is the case with traditional IMAX screens (such as the one in Darling Harbour and the one in the Melbourne Museum).

When will IMAX come back to Adelaide?
    • Sorry Spero, there are no plans to re-open an IMAX theatre in Adelaide by us. Sydney's just a few hours by plane, so hop on a flight and come up to see Transformers 2 on the world's biggest screen.... only here in Darling Harbour.

there is no other film or digital medium greater than 15 perforated 70mm prints reffered to as imax. Digital isn't necessarily better in qaulity than analogue film projection its just more precise, easier and cheaper to use. Digital is logically always the better choice but thats the method not the final product. The whole point of imax digital is to make more theatres to show imax films at a cost effective manner that is much easier to control and operate. The confusion is people believe imax means the huge 70mm prints. Imax is just the company name but when its advertised as see such n such on imax it is confusing. The big issue is that film is more limiting because cost are high as its a physical medium. Digital you can do as you want as its a virtual canvas and is easily modified. eg. If you were to who make an imax film at 48 or 72 frames per second than the cost of the print doubles/triples. if u were to do the same on digital it depends on hard disk space and the projector with a high enough refresh rate with they can handle already. basically imax FILM is the best in quality but its alot harder to get the job done compared to digital mediums. I have seen Terminator salvation digitally and was good with no flyscreen but issue was dark detail was non existant. I saw 2 films same day before this screen on film and the adds where the same and ice age 3 look more vivid, colourful and more detailed in comparison. Digitals strength will be 3d as its such a clear recording medium it brings the flat digital image to life. The camera system being used for AVATAR wHich is 3d is amazing which James Cameron co pioneered. It has two lenses in the one housing which act just like the human eye and will move automatically to keep the same focus your eyes have so if something comes close to the screen the focus is natural. Look on youtube for James cameron's 3d camera.

Is Transformers 2 in Imax 3d?
    • No, it's not in IMAX 3D but it has been shot in part with IMAX cameras which means selected scenes will expand vertically to fill the entire 8 storey high screen. You might be interested to know that some scenes in the next Harry Potter film - due out on 15 July - will be in IMAX 3D.

Is transformers 2 going to be shown any longer than the week ending July 1st?
    • Yes it will. It's just that our programming hasn't been locked in beyond that date. We set session times on the Monday of each week as a rule, although sessions for feature films may be updated more regularly than that. Check back in a few days time...

Why can't they just call it IMAX-D, then people wont get pissed off when they find out its just a normal screen. I was furious after paying to see a movie at the Fox Studios so called 'IMAX'
    • This has been our main gripe too: the fact that there is no sub-branding of the digital IMAX theatres to help audiences differentiate between experiences - and make the choice for themselves!
  • Tickets for Transformers 2 through to July 8 have now been locked in and sales are available online or at the box office. Visit the BUY TICKETS tab on our home page.
