Sucks that your paying the full IMAX price yet your getting a small screen, lower resolution and the wrong aspect ratio for the IMAX scenes meaning your getting a cropped image.

i saw transformers 2 yesterday and here's my verdict. The movie was really enjoyable. much more about the transformers and the cgi is incredible. the bad. The imax is good for still or slow moving edit free shots. The 35mm material thats been upgraded for imax was terrible. Its was blurry, grainy and withe the fast moving action and cuts you can't see whats happening. its just a blur. I hated the 35 mm material it like a boot leg copy. when i saw the digital projector doing ads it really struggles for good picture. the blacks are washed out and the pixels where to visible like tiles. but i can't complain as it was only ads. the imax intro for the full size print really showed off the quality of the imax. being so close to the screen it was like you were looking in the distance, but once the harry potter trailer started it was awefull. it was obvious a 35mm dmr print and like i ahave mentioned the image was really bad. the imax scenes were of much better qaulity but because most the action was whippy it was hard to appreciate the quality of the prints. The action particular withh 35mm dmr material was just a blur when there was fighting. the poor scaling was what made the image so bad when moving. The 35mm material really needs to be upscaled to about 8k resolution because the image just looked like it was stretched out. only close up shots in 35mm dmr was clear. The imax movie version is good to see the 2 imax sequences but most of the movie and being near the front made the image unbarable to watch with 35mm dmr. verdict is that a normal 35mm version would be far far better than what was printed on imax. But for the imax shots you should see it in imax as standard theaters will chop 2/3 of picture off and qaulity isn't as good as the imax filmed shots. sound waves few shots in space was a good example of how much better slow shots look on a big screen

I disagree about the 35mm scenes looking grainy because it SHOULD look grainy but IMAX DMR process scrubbed that away and so was the detail. All scrubbed away. 35mm especially for a Michael Bay movie shou8ld be grainy I beleive he shoots on ISO 500 film. IMO IMAX should just scan in the 35mm film at 6K-8K and leave it as it is. It looks the best that way. But when you apple Digital Noise Reduction and remove the natural film grain you also lose detail. And to compensate for the detail loss they add Edge Enhancement which gives us ugly halos around the edges of the objects.

your right the 35mm would be grainy particularly as its a smaller print but if the image was digitised and accurately upscaled that the image would be alot sharper. I don't know stock bay uses but the details is really good. possible due to the grain. edge enhancements i think are a no no. Yes if they upscaled the print to 6k-8k resolution than the picture would be much cleaner and the grain would blend in. Problem i had was the 35mm material particularly near the front of screen was sooo bad. It was like trying to watch an SD you tube video. I won't be watching any 35mm film at imax unless its fixed. The quality should not be sacrificed for screen size. I had another look at the super dimension 70 film and projection format and apparantly there is little visible grain. I understand the grain is a major make up of celluloid but a near grainless print would be impressive. I'm not against grain. Its just the picture is really bad when the grain is clearer than the photographed image. It'd be nice if there was a way to increase the depth of field on imax because it would be easier on the eyes. I found the imax intro countdown really good as you could look at the image being oblivious of the flat sceen. I think bay really needed an imax expert in control of the imax scenes. But they were still quite good. Imax, you need to just upscale the 35mm prints without digital enhancements. It was aweful having to watch the 35mm material so close to the screen and blurred.

I agree that because of IMAX's current DMR process it makes the 35mm scenes look like watching a DVD. Everything was so waxy and alot of detail was lost.
