IMAX NEWS

An avalanche of blockbuster films is headed your way!

Just when you thought things couldn't get any better in Darling Harbour - with both Transformers 2 and Harry Potter screening at your favourite IMAX Theatre - it looks like the next year's lineup will be even more impressive. Hold on to your seats... put on those 3D glasses... and get ready for our biggest blockbuster season yet!

A Christmas Carol 3D - Starts 5 November 2009
Disney's A Christmas Carol, this year's spectacular 3D holiday release from director Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey, will be the first film from The Walt Disney Studios slated for IMAX theatres under a new five-picture arrangement the studio reached with IMAX Corporation. Robert Zemeckis' takes the art of performance capture to the next level in this multi-sensory 3D film, capturing the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale. Ebeneezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman), and his cheery nephew (Colin Firth). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come (all played by Carrey) take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it's too late.

Avatar 3D - Starts 18 December 2009
James Cameron, the acclaimed director of Titanic takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love - as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization in this epic action adventure fantasy. Conceived 14 years ago and over four years in the making, Avatar breaks new ground in delivering a fully immersive, emotional story and reinvents the moviegoing experience. Avatar will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX 3D Experience®.

“Our goal with Avatar is to revolutionize live-action 3D moviemaking, and I have no doubt that it will look and sound incredible in IMAX 3D,” said director James Cameron. “The larger field of view and powerful surround sound of an IMAX(R) theatre will completely immerse the audience in a way that cannot be experienced anywhere else.”

Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D - Starts February 2010
Featuring nine-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater, Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D will immerse audiences in the story of an ocean wave and the lives it impacts and transforms. From astounding 3D surfing action to the chaos of ocean storms, the film leads audiences on a quest to understand one of this planet’s most intriguing and dramatic phenomena. Action focuses on Tahiti, home to some of the world’s most challenging surfing and to astounding coral reef ecosystems at the turbulent interface between island and ocean.

Alice in Wonderland 3D - Starts March 2010
Visionary filmmaker Tim Burton will put his distinctive touch on this combined live-action and performance capture version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale “Alice in Wonderland.” The all-star cast includes Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Alan Rickman and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. The film is actually a sequel to the original story, following Alice, now 17 years old, as she escapes from a snooty party and follows a white rabbit down a hole, back to Wonderland. The White Rabbit is convinced that he has the right girl, the one who had visited the magical land ten years prior. But Alice doesn’t remember her past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them, but will she? Can she?

Here are some incredible images from our slate of films ahead...

Jim Carrey plays four characters - thanks to "performance capture" film technology - in this classic Dickens tale.

James Cameron's highly anticipated new film Avatar 3D is a veritable pandora's box of special effects.

The world premiere of Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D will be held at none other than... IMAX in Darling Harbour!

No prizes for guessing which of Lewis Carroll's fantastic characters is played by Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland 3D.

Which of these news films are you most looking forward to seeing at IMAX?

Avatar all the way. It's going to be enormous, and more than likely the best of those listed above, too. Plus, 3D is a big focus of the film, and it will look best on an IMAX screen.
  • JohnnyDeppFan 385 years ago
Can't wait to watch Johnny Depp in 3D! It's going to look wonderful. :)
  • RiseDarthVader 383 years ago
Avatar for sure. Might look bad because it was shot in 1920x1080 though. The resolution will be noticeable at IMAX.
    • chris e 383 years ago
No, Avatar will look fine on IMAX. U23D was shot with the Cameron-Pace camera system developed for Avatar and it looked perfectly fine. The image will be slightly softer than in a digital cinema, but the 3D effect will be much better.
  • Don't forget Cameron has already made two digital 3D films for IMAX - Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep. He upgraded both his cameras and post production techniques to ensure the best quality for the IMAX screen, so this is an area where Cameron has a head start on most other mainstream directors who are trying to produce for the IMAX screen. I heard Cameron speak when he gave a presentation to the giant screen industry on how he'd improved both image capture and post production from Ghosts of the Abyss to Aliens of the Deep. If these two were more than acceptable in IMAX I have no doubt Avatar will be more so. I have seen 24 minutes of selected scenes from Avatar (on a regular digital screen), from a technical point of view I don't think anyone will be even remotely disappointed with what they see.

Did you go to comic-con or was this a screening setup by Fox to promote more Digital 3D screens in Australia? Also is IMAX Sydney participating in Avatar day or has Fox not contacted you yet? http://www.comingsoon.net/news/avatarnews.php?id=57438
    • No, didn't go to comic-con this was something organised in Australia. We are waiting more details for Avatar day, however it appears this will be a Fox event and by invitation only.

yea how do we get tickets ?
    • miranda huggenstein 11 months ago
      figure it out
    • Our understanding is this will be a single screening. It will be an industry and media event hosted by 20th Centrury Fox and will be by invitation only. We'll post more information when we know more.
  • Avatardude 11 months ago
    Invitation only.. how gay
  • Tony 11 months ago
Huh?? James Cameron made the point that ANYONE should be able to just line up, seats pending, and see the footage for free. Its suppose to be a FAN showing, not an industry one. So I really hope that's wrong and Sydney IMAX will be open for everyone like the others. Especially since our options our limited to just one theater in the city.
  • Jack 11 months ago
knowing Australia, they will sell the tickets for $999.99
  • ram 11 months ago
Avatar day was supposed to be a fans showing for free and as said by James Cameron anyone can lineup and watch it for free, hope its not an invitation only show........... that would be so unfair for the fans.........
  • chris e 11 months ago
Invitation only is not how it was advertised. 'Avatar Day' was announced as a free screening for a global audience. Aren't events for industry and media...usually free? Cameron said that the event would be a way to bring the experience at Comic-Con (i.e. the unveiling of footage to the GENERAL PUBLIC) to a broad audience who couldn't be there. Also, as far as I understand it, studios don't promote media/industry events on websites targeted at the general public. Something is very fishy about Fox Australia's response here. If this is true, the 'Avatar Day' event isn't worldwide at all.
  • chris e 11 months ago
Re: free...what I meant to say was that the 'free' aspect was meant to be an unprecedented marketing step. There's definitely a precedent to holding a media screening for free to build buzz.
  • Fox will make an announcement shortly. I would avoid jumping to conclusions until the announcement is made.
  • chris e 11 months ago
A bit much. You did see the bit about avoiding jumping to conclusions, right?
  • Simon 11 months ago
This is so typical of our LUCKY COUNTRY, MORE LIKE ABSOLUTE SHIT COUNTRY. NOT ONLY are movie tickets about 2X the price of other western countries, but so is everything else, don't even get me started on RENT!!! GOD FORBID, you can watch 15 mins for free. OH NO there no way a normal human being can sit down and watch something for free. NO some special event for freaks has to be held... I can just see us jumping through 1010 hoops set on fire while held by demons to just get tickets. HECK i'll be SHOCKED if they even SCREEN IT, knowing they can't charge for it. Typical scum..

Um, you guys might want to go check out Rotten Tomatoes. http://au.rottentomatoes.com/m/1194501-avatar/news/1836349/be_the_first_to_see_a_sneak_peek_of_avatar

wow, i thought only 8 year olds couldn't handle suspense. and why complain on a imax blog page instead of sending your invaluable insights to the production and/or marketing company that handles these things.
speaking for Mark from IMAX who can't actually say this: SHUT THE HELL UP and wait till an update
  • Avatar@sydneyimax 11 months ago
Imax Melbourne gets a screening and the Sydney one does not, what gives? And whats with the "invitation" only ..., that's not how you advertise films fox!!!!
  • Avatarmaniac 11 months ago
Hey guys there's definitely a Sydney screening and you can get tickets to all venues via twitter on www.twitter.com/avataraustralia, it's pretty easy to win really!
    • Avatar@sydneyimax 11 months ago
Thanks for the heads up on that site, got myself tickets!
  • RiseDarthVader 11 months ago
Is the IMAX website hosting their own competition to give out Avatar day tickets? Cause apparently you guys do http://blog.quickflix.com.au/2009/08/get-your-tickets-to-avatar-day.html
  • chris e 11 months ago
Moviehole, Twitter and Quickflix are giving out tickets to Darling Harbor IMAX. Hoyts and Greater Union/Event Cinemas are giving away tickets to the screening at Entertainment Quarter and George St.
  • John 11 months ago
This is BEYOUND frustrating!!!! I just checked most of those competitions. Some are now done, others are too vague like the Twitter one (even signed up for Twitter to enter lol) but not sure how often they have chances to win tickets. I heard they were coming back the next day, I came back and apparently I missed it. Other places you have to already be a member just to even sign up for the competition like the Greater Union theaters. The Quickfix site just leads you right back here and there is NOTHING on this sites front page to even tell you about any competition.

This is so damn frustrating, I wish they just did it like in the U.S., throw up a date a time the tickets will be allocated and simply first come, first served for everyone instead of all these silly give aways that seem to be half arsed. Hell, I might even just show up at Sydney IMAX on that day and see if I get lucky with getting a ticket ;). At this rate, I dont see any other way sadly.
  • News is just to hand that we have 75 DOUBLE PASSES available for fans to attend the Avatar Preview Event at 5pm this Friday, 21 August, here at IMAX in Darling Harbour. We had to keep our lips sealed until now, but now's your chance to enter our competition for a chance to attend. All the details are posted on our website home page. GOOD LUCK!

And please keep the obscenities to a minimum, this is a family website!

I saw Avatar and although i enjoyed the movie it was a let down in the 3d experience department...and the people around us all felt the same. It was a downgrade.
What happened to the 3d polarized visors that sat on your head like a helmet? They were amazing! the crappy two coloured glasses were pretty bad. Has technology gone backwards? I remember people trying to pick things out of the air in front of them! the experiences i had at imax with the visors when my son was a young child were more like virtual reality. Now it seems the prices have gone up and the quality has gone down. It was annoying to find the technology had regressed. Not worth the 20 dollars we paid - so BRING BACK THE VISORS.
