How does IMAX 3D actually work?

One of the most frequently asked questions here at the Theatre is: "How does 3D actually work?" In a nutshell, 3D film technology mimics the way our own eyes see the world, yet on a flat cinema screen. ie. When you look at an object in real life, each eye sees a slightly different view and our brain fuses these together into a single 3D image. The two lenses on the IMAX® 3D camera roughly match the distance between our eyes and so each lens 'sees' and records a slightly different view. The end result is two separate reels of film for every IMAX 3D movie (one reel with the left eye view and another reel with the right eye view). These two reels of film run simultaneously through the camera and your polarized IMAX 3D glasses fuse the two images together, creating the 3D effect on screen.

First pictures of Avatar released

Did you attend the Avatar Preview Event? What did you think of the 15 minutes of footage shown at IMAX? To fill in a few of the gaps between those incredibly beautiful - and quite awe-inspiring - images we saw on screen at the Preview, here's the official word on the film's story:

"In the epic action adventure AVATAR, James Cameron, the director of “Titanic,” takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination. On the distant moon Pandora, a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story."

Follow Alice back down the rabbit hole - in IMAX 3D!

“There is a place like no place on Earth… a land full of wonder, mystery and danger. Some say to survive it, you need to be mad as a hatter. Which, luckily, I am.”

Johnny Depp's words echo against a backdrop of lavishly costumed characters and fantasy landsapes in this new Tim Burton film - Alice in Wonderland 3D - due out in March 2010. In a departure from many other Alice adaptations, director Tim Burton has confirmed that the film will feature elements from both "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" in a story based on Alice's returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting her with childhood friends: The White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, The Dormouse, The Caterpillar, The Cheshire Cat, and of course, The Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end The Red Queen's reign of terror.
