Darling Harbour Open Day for Teachers 2010

Did you attend the Darling Harbour Open Day for Teachers on 21 March? If you did, you were one of over a thousand teachers who came along to Darling Harbour to preview FREE the extensive range of educational facilities available for schools.

Registration this year was divided between IMAX, the Aquarium and Powerhouse Museum, with the aim of speeding up the arrival process on the day. And this year we dispensed with the formal presentation in order to give everyone more time to explore the precinct at leisure, in addition to an extended admission validity to 21 April. Save those unused vouchers and come back anbother day! Darling Harbour's a big place and one single day just can't do it justice.

IMAX was a popular choice on the day, with many hundreds taking up the chance to see Alice in Wonderland 3D FREE on the world’s biggest screen. Also showing on the day were three sought after documentaries: Dinosaurs Alive! 3D, Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D and Under the Sea 3D. For late stayers, Avatar at 9.30pm was on offer, now holding the record at the world’s biggest grossing film, eclipsing director James Cameron’s previously held record with Titanic.

For teachers and students, Darling Harbour offers so much choice. Combine your IMAX film with a visit to Sydney Aquarium, Wildlife World or Powerhouse Museum. Or take a tour of one of the vessels moored at the front of the Maritime Museum before exploring the latest new exhibition on show. See the city from above on Sydney’s iconic Monorail, or simply have lunch by the waterfront overlooking Cockle Bay. Plus much more…

"A smoothly organised day allowing teachers to 'check out' a large number of venues for possible school excursions for all years; staff was helpful to answer questions about the venues and excursions; and it was a great day for me."C. Greef, Sydney Secondary College, Leichhardt Campus.

"Absolutely loved it as did my children. It was a beautiful day and very informative." O. Abdalla, Al-Faisal College

"I think this day is a wonderful concept which gives educators the opportunity to sample a number of learning opportunities for their students. It also gives these venues the opportunity to showcase what they offer. There are a truely wonderful range of experiences on offer for our students at Darling Harbour." J. Farley, Richmond HS

"It was great to see all the venues were opened especially when you don't get a chance to do so before the excursions. I spoke it over with colleagues who also went and we discussed it further to see which excursions were more suitable for the students that we teach and the topics that they're learning about. It was a good incentive to get out of the house and see what darling harbour has to offer considering i haven't been there for a while. It was good to see other new exhibits were on offer as well which i wouldn't have known about if i didn't go to the open day. It was an enjoyable day and the kids loved it too which is like a response to see how the students will react to the venue if taken and how long they should be in the city and how long it takes at each venue. I truly enjoyed myself." C. Palma, Campsie PS
