Why Director Brad Bird used IMAX cameras when filming key scenes in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

When you watch Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol be sure to see on a giant IMAX screen, just the director Brad Bird intended. In this clip below, we hear why Brad Bird chose to use IMAX cameras when filming select scenes in the film, including the cliff hanger sequence which involves Tom Cruise literally hanging off the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

    how can the film be in imax when only 30 minutes of the film were filmed in imax? becouse the other 1 and a half hours were blown up digitally or what? please explane.

      That's correct, the majority of the film was shot using conventional film and filmmaking techniques, and then later digitally enhanced using IMAX proprietary technology developed especially for the giant IMAX screen, known as "DMR" (or digital media remastering). All the feature films screened at IMAX have undergone this process of DMR conversion.

      Some films like The Dark Knight and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol have been shot in part with IMAX cameras using large fomat film, which further enhances key sequences within the films, creating a more immersive effect as the images literally expand to fill the entire IMAX screen.
