We're installing a new giant IMAX screen. It's a big job, so the Theatre will be closed from 6-18 February.

We are installing a brand new giant IMAX 3D screen.
It’s big (naturally), so it’s a big job, which means we will be closed from 6-18 February, reopening for business as usual on Sunday 19 February.
• The screen measures 29.5m h by 35.7m wide and weighs approx 800kg. It is the biggest cinema screen in the world.
• On the day the screen is lifted onto the frame it will require 20 riggers working simultaneously to raise it the 30m to its full height.
• It will be painted on site using 350kg of special high gain silver paint. It will need four coats and each coat requires 24 hours to dry. A special paint rig scaffold has been brought in from IMAX in Canada to perform this task.

Adam 4 months agoIf this isn't a digital conversion, then is it fair to say you won't be able to screen The Hobbit in 48fps later this year?
-
IMAX Theatre Sydney 4 months agoIt is not a digital conversion, the projector will remain unchanged. We're only replacing the screen because it has reached the end of its life cycle and we want to ensure we continue to present a really great picture. We plan to screen The Hobbit later this year as a regular IMAX 3D film, which like all our other features will be a 15/70mm IMAX film print.

Ben 3 months agoSounds great! Is the size any different to the old screen? Any other differences?
-
IMAX Theatre Sydney 3 months agoNo difference in the physical size of the screen - we're still the world's biggest - but the surface will be brighter and the images you'll enjoy as an audience member should also be brighter and bolder. The 3D images on screen should actually be larger than previously, which is great news.

ach 3 months agoHang on, did you just surreptitiously change the date of the re-opening from 18 Feb to 19 Feb? I'm almost certain it used to say you would re-open on 18 Feb, just wished I had proof. If I'm correct, then that is really unprofessional behaviour. We had planned on coming to see a movie at IMAX tonight.

IMAX Theatre Sydney 3 months agoHi Andrew, yes you are correct, originally we were due to re-open on the Sat 18. Unfortunately we had some very last minute delays which meant that we had to push back the opening by a day to Sun 19. (Those who had already purchased tickets for the Saturday have been fully refunded and compensated) We apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused and we hope that you will come back to check out the new screen soon!
