Out with the old screen and in with the new!
Monday, February 6 by Julie Brown
The world's biggest IMAX screen has (temporarily) come down in preparation for the new screen installation.
At about 8.30am this morning, a team of riggers climbed to the top of the auditorium and set the screen free from the scaffolding holding it up from behind.
Dave from IMAX in Toronto, Canada was kind enough to retrieve us a section of the old silver painted vinyl that has been part of our film backdrop for the past fifteen years.
On Thursday this week, we will watch in awe as the brand new vinyl is hoisted eight storeys high and stretched over the scaffolding before being prepared for painting. A special silver coating is required to enhance the screen's polarization for 3D films.

Titanic An IMAX 3D Experience will be released on 5 April. See it here at IMAX in Darling Harbour.

On April 5, 2012, IMAX in Darling Harbour will release James Cameron's blockbuster film - Titanic - starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio.
The film has been specially converted to IMAX 3D by James Cameron to coincide with the centenary of the ship's sinking at 2.20am on April 15, 1912.
If you haven't yet seen the famous film at the cinema, or if you like the idea of reliving the experience all over again, sharing it with others, you won't believe your eyes when you step aboard the ship on the world's biggest screen.

The curtain is raised on the installation of the new IMAX screen. Take a look behind the scenes.

On Thursday 9 February at around 10.30am, the new giant IMAX screen was raised, replacing the old one which has served as our film backdrop for the past 15 years.
A team of 31 riggers arrived on site early in the morning to unfurl the 35 metre long vinyl sheeting and then scale the eight storey high steel frame that acts as the backbone of the screen once in place.
Metal rods were threaded onto the top of the vinyl and then ropes that dangled from the top of the frame were then tied securely along the length of the rods.
